Group B strep (GBS) is a type of bacteria that occurs naturally in about 25% of both men and women worldwide. It is thought to originate in the gastrointestinal tract (gut), but can also be found in the reproductive and urinary tracts due to their close proximity. It is not considered a sexually-transmitted disease because even someone with no prior sexual experience can carry GBS. However, microorganisms such as GBS and other bacteria, viruses, etc. can be transmissible through sexual contact including oral sex. Although proper hygiene is important, carrying GBS does not mean that you are unclean. Anyone can carry GBS!
